With exhibitions at Instituto Tomie Ohtake and Museu da Casa Brasileira, two facets of Ruy Ohtake's work can be seen simultaneously in São Paulo starting this week. While the institute privileges pieces of furniture, objects and finishing materials, in the exhibition The Shape Design – curated by Fábio Magalhães, Marili Brandão and Priscyla Gomes –, the museum exhibits around 40 projects by the architect curated by Agnaldo Farias, in the exhibition The production of Dining Room.

Ruy Ohtake is one of the most renowned living Brazilian architects, with almost 60 years of career, and he signs urban projects such as the Parque Ecológico do Tietê, the Educational and Cultural Center and Residential Condominium of Heliópolis and the Tietê Express, as well as buildings such as the Tomie Ohtake Institute building itself, the Unique Hotel, the Alvorada Hotel in Brasília, the Brazilian Embassy in Tokyo and the Pantanal Aquarium, in Mato Grosso do Sul.

“The exhibition emphasizes Ohtake’s conception of what the role of architecture should be for contemporary man, how his work takes on different translations, according to the nature of the project, the impact that, due to the unexpectedness of its mass, its shapes, spaces and colors, it can provoke in the part of the city where it is inscribed, among its users or simply in the people who pass and are surprised”, says Farias. “Ohtake’s spatial thinking translates into its unique architecture, a production that faces the country’s difficulties and strives to improve it not only through technical responses, but through the beauty that soothes the eye and feeds the imagination.”

At the Instituto Tomie Ohtake, pieces of furniture, objects and finishing materials created by Ohtake are gathered, which present a long and detailed investigation into how it is possible to develop furniture and building at the same time. In his architectural projects, Ohtake also designs elements such as tables, shelves, sofas, sideboards and stairs. The exhibition of pieces, including porcelain, wood, steel and glass, seeks to carefully unravel their proximity to the study of materials, their behaviors and limits, in addition to an attentive understanding of the stages of production.

A opening of Ruy Ohtake: The Design of Form takes place this Monday at Instituto Tomie Ohtake, while Ruy Ohtake: The Production of Espace opens this Tuesday at the Museu da Casa Brasileira. During the exhibitions, concrete workshops will also be organized at the museum and a laboratory with Ruy Ohtake at the Oficina Lab, on the use of wood in design. Finally, the book will be released Ruy Ohtake, the Architect, organized by Abilio Guerra and Silvana Romano, still undecided.
