EXHIBITION | Until April 12th, the Pinacoteca of São Paulo EXHIBITION | Until April 12th, the Pinacoteca de São Paulo presents “Carnival Work”, a group exhibition that brings together works by 70 artists from different generations and backgrounds, including Alberto Pitta, Bárbara Wagner, Ilu Obá de Min, Heitor dos Prazeres, and Rafa Bqueer. With approximately 200 works, the exhibition occupies the Pina Contemporânea building and is organized into four sections — Fantasy, Work, Power, and City — to discuss Carnival as a production network that precedes and sustains the festival, while also exposing the precariousness and invisibility of its workers. THINGS FROM HISTORY | Carnival. It sounds like a swear word, THINGS FROM HISTORY | Entrudo. It sounds like a swear word, but it's just the name of the precursor to Carnival in Brazil. Inspired by medieval practices, Entrudo had nothing to do with the masked balls of Europe. In Rio de Janeiro, revelers took to the streets to wet and smear each other, initially with scented lemons, as the wax balls filled with perfumed water, produced especially for the occasion, were called. The problem is that, instead of scented lemons, some sprayed other liquids, such as currant juice, coffee, and even urine. To top it off, they threw flour, starch, or any other powder they had on hand. Considered violent and offensive, Entrudo was eventually banned in the mid-19th century. THINGS FROM HISTORY | A debate with a surprising outcome THINGS FROM HISTORY | A debate with a surprising outcome occurred after the death of Baron Rio Branco, a week before Carnival in 1912. One group wanted to keep the festivities in February. Another argued that the party should be postponed to April. As soon as news of his death spread through Rio, businesses closed their doors. Subsequently, the president, Marshal Hermes da Fonseca, decreed official mourning, and Carnival was postponed to April. The street celebrations, however, exploded the week following the baron's funeral. The uniqueness of 1912 is the subject of a master's thesis, "The Dream of Every Reveler – A Year with Two Carnivals (Rio de Janeiro – 1912)," defended by Débora Paiva Monteiro at the Federal Fluminense University. MUSIC | Tiganá Santana's career is through MUSIC | Tiganá Santana's career is intertwined with research into African languages. Through his album titled Maçalê ("you are one with your essence," in archaic Yoruba), released in 2009, Tiganá became the first Brazilian composer to create songs in African languages. In his new concert, the artist revisits his seven albums and reunites with the first Afro-Brazilian bloco, Ilê Aiyê, of which his mother is one of the directors, a central reference in his upbringing. On February 27th, 28th, and March 1st, Tiganá (vocals, guitar, and acoustic guitar) will perform at Sesc Vila Mariana alongside Ldson Galter (bass), Cauê Silva (percussion), Leonardo Mendes (guitars), and Aline Falcão (piano and keyboards).
