POLITICS | The economics of culture and industries POLITICS | The economy of culture and creative industries represents 3,11% of Brazil's GDP and employs approximately 7,5 million people. Investing in culture means generating jobs and income and strengthening local economies. CULTURE | What happens to culture when the State CULTURE | What happens to culture when the State reduces its role? Javier Milei's Argentina experienced cuts in film funding, reduced resources for cultural institutions, and the withdrawal of support for initiatives such as the Buenos Aires Book Fair. In Brazil, the recreation of the Ministry of Culture, the expansion of incentive policies, and the continuation of the Aldir Blanc National Policy recognize culture as part of the responsibilities of public authorities. The choices of those who govern have consequences for artistic production, access to culture, and the continuity of institutions that preserve and disseminate knowledge. In this second round of elections, discussing culture is also discussing the role of the State and the country we want to build.
INSTITUTION | Walking through Inhotim is a hunt for INSTITUTION | Walking through Inhotim is like a treasure hunt. While physical maps are becoming increasingly rare, the open-air museum in Brumadinho is one of the few places where visitors still cling to them tightly, tracing routes with their index fingers, squinting, and asking for directions. Even so, it's difficult to grasp the park's size and understand its geography. For the "Open Air" exhibition, opening in November as part of Inhotim's 20th-anniversary celebrations, a large 15 m² model will help to illustrate the institution's magnitude. After all, it encompasses 144 hectares, with lakes, winding paths, isolated galleries nestled among hills, and gardens. Seen from satellite imagery, Inhotim is a green sea, its paths and buildings lost amidst the vegetation. The Minas Gerais-born designer and artist Daniel Herthel was responsible for creating this structure based on a drone survey. “We started from an almost scientific premise of trying to see the whole picture,” says the exhibition curator Lucas Menezes, “but it went through an aesthetic lens; it’s a design that is in harmony with what we produce. It’s not a model of a real estate development.” 📌Read the full text by Luiza Lorenzetti (@luiza.lorenzetti), which is part of issue #76 of the magazine, on the website artebrasileiros.com.br (link in bio). EXHIBITION | Brazil is the only country named after EXHIBITION | Brazil is the only country named after a tree. From the heartwood of the Brazilwood tree, brasilin is extracted, a substance that, in contact with air and light, transforms into an intense red pigment, the color of embers. The same reaction that produces the crimson hue, however, reveals the suffering of the species subjected to drastic pruning and violent cuts. It is from this ambivalence, in which wealth and devastation are born from a single gesture, that Brasilina: Poetics of a Motherland Nation originates, on display at the SESI Cultural Center Gallery in Jardim da Penha, Vitória, until October 31st. Organized by Decoranea and the 1COMUM Collective, the exhibition was conceived by Isabela Castello and Fernando Caseira Nicolau, curated by Isabela and Isabel Portella, and produced by Elaine Pinheiro. The works, from different cities and generations, are organized into three themes: Identity, Nature, and Society. 📌Read the full text by Giuliano de Miranda (@giuliano.2803) on the website artebrasileiros.com.br (link in bio) Images: 1 and 2 Handerson Chic, untitled (Diptych/Motherland Nation) 3 Patrick Vasconcelos, Stubbornness Made the Penha Neighborhood Emerge, 2026 4 Marcelo Macaue, Quilombo Kalunga Series 5 Evna, Phytotypes Series (portraits on leaves) 6 Marilene Nacaratti, Cosmographers, 2026 Photos: Fabíola Fraga
CULTURE | New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani CULTURE | New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that project grants awarded to individual artists by the city's Department of Cultural Affairs will increase from $5 to $10, the first increase in nearly twenty years. The department's budget for 2027 is the largest in the city's history. “$5 is simply not enough money to complete a project. The last thing we want is for artists to go into debt to finish a work because of a grant,” said Diya Vij, Commissioner of Cultural Affairs, to ARTnews. A January report from the Center for an Urban Future indicated that the population of resident artists in New York City has fallen by 4,4% since 2019. The measure is part of a series of actions. EXHIBITION | To learn to see, air intelligence EXHIBITION | To learn to see, artificial intelligence needs human eyes. It is this juxtaposition, made of work, classification, resource extraction, and surveillance, that “The World Through AI,” at Sesc 24 de Maio, brings into focus. With approximately 70 works by 29 artists from various countries, the exhibition, organized by the Jeu de Paume in Paris and curated by researcher Antonio Somaini, does not intend to explain the technical workings of artificial intelligence nor celebrate its achievements: it looks at AI as a historical, political, and cultural phenomenon: a contemporary way of organizing the world and deciding what can be seen, recognized, classified, or discarded. 📌Read the full text by Leonor Amarante (@amaranteleonor), which is part of issue #76 of the magazine, on the website artebrasileiros.com.br (link in bio). BIENNIAL | Manauara Clandestina presents “The Cobra G BIENNIAL | Manauara Clandestina presents “A Cobra Grande” (2026) at the Brazilian Pavilion of the 16th Gwangju Biennial in South Korea. The textile installation, developed in collaboration with her brother Henrique de Farias, stems from an experience of migration and reunion between the two. Born in Manaus and sons of missionary pastors, the siblings had their first contact with art in Pentecostal church services—singing, dancing, theater. The piece was conceived along a journey connecting the AiR 351 residency in Cascais, the Tropismo residency in Seoul, and the pavilion in Gwangju, incorporating the very transit between territories as part of its language. The exhibition “Devotions of Tomorrow — Brazil in Sprouts,” curated by Aldones Nino and Bruna Levi, brings together 35 Brazilian artists from different generations and is on display until November 15th at the Gwangju History & Folk Museum. In 2025, during the 23rd Flip (Paraty International Literary Festival), Marina Silva spoke about persistence. She didn't call herself optimistic or pessimistic: she called herself persistent. Today, after an election that is reshaping the Brazilian political landscape, we revisit that statement: Art is persistence. Life is persistence. Politics is persistence. We insist on democracy and possible futures. The conversation, moderated by @alinemidlej, is available in its entirety on the @flip_se channel.
What kind of Brazil do we want to build? For the psychologist What kind of Brazil do we want to build? For psychoanalyst Christian Dunker, the image of the abyss arises spontaneously when we think about Brazil and the history of its democracy, "as an index of inequality, as the fruit of a colonization marked by an abyssal relationship, a relationship in which passage from one side to the other is forbidden." It is necessary to think about reparation strategies to reinvent the country. In 2022, Dunker spoke about this at the panel "The Abyss and the Stitching" of the "Culture, Democracy and Reparation Seminar," promoted by [organization name missing]. arte!brasileiros And by Sesc São Paulo. Let's reclaim this discourse now, after the election of a Senate that distances us from the democratic ideals we defend. ✚ Access artebrasileiros.com.br/vii-seminario #Psychology #Psychoanalysis #Democracy #Culture #SescSP
