EXHIBITION | Gentil Carioca presents its 21st edition EXHIBITION | Gentil Carioca presents the 21st edition of Abre Alas, a project that has opened the gallery's annual calendar since 2005. Conceived as a platform for presenting and monitoring artistic research, the initiative brings together 14 artists selected by Felipe Molitor, Lena Solà Nogué, and Ramon Martins, with simultaneous exhibitions in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Created from the analysis of portfolios submitted to the gallery at the beginning of its trajectory, Abre Alas has established itself as a space for interaction between artists, curators, and the public. FRANCE-BRAZIL SEASON | “Debret's work is not FRANCE-BRAZIL SEASON | “Debret’s work is not limited to reflecting on his time. On the contrary, Debret interrogates his time by establishing two distinct studios, in which he produces two absolutely different types of works,” writes the French researcher Jacques Leenhardt in the book Rever Debret, published this year by Editora 34. The author refers to the fact that the artist Jean-Baptiste Debret arrived in Brazil in 1816 as part of the French Artistic Mission. His role was to fulfill government commissions as a painter for the Portuguese court. However, while creating these paintings in his “court studio,” he also recorded the daily life of the population of Rio de Janeiro, with drawings that showed the lives of Portuguese, indigenous, and enslaved Africans. EXHIBITION | Until February 22nd, Sesc Bele EXHIBITION | Until February 22nd, Sesc Belenzinho presents the exhibition “Ònà Irin: railway path”, a solo show by the artist Nádia Taquary. Curated by Amanda Bonan, Ayrson Heráclito, and Marcelo Campos, the exhibition premiered at the Rio Art Museum (MAR) in 2023 and was on display at the National Museum of Afro-Brazilian Culture (MUNCAB) in Salvador until March of this year. EXHIBITION | Upon entering the exhibition of the Brazilian artist EXHIBITION | Upon entering the exhibition of Brasília-based artist Antonio Obá at Mendes Wood DM in São Paulo, visitors walk alongside Sansevieria (also known as Mother-in-law's tongue or Saint Barbara's sword) and other similar plants. These healing and protective plants, used in Afro-Brazilian traditions, prepare those who arrive for a show surrounded by elements of luck, ritual, and prayer. Entitled "Birth," the exhibition occupies the entire gallery with mostly previously unseen works. According to Obá, the presented collection stems from a broad selection within a research process that attempts to expand his self-references into a greater experience. He explains: “It's a journey. From this birth to culminating in this outcome, which is death, and the various deaths we end up having along the way. Why not celebrate these moments?
