Almeida & Dale inaugurates its 2026 exhibition program with two new exhibitions starting January 24th. The river in which one swims with one's eyes., first exhibition of Genor Sales in São Paulo, curated by Divine Sobral, brings together previously unseen watercolors that address social and existential debates surrounding rivers. The collective exhibition Vectors It offers an overview of works spanning different periods of modern and contemporary art, featuring names from significant movements and groups in Brazilian art, such as Concretism, Neoconcretism, the Ruptura Group, and the 1980s generation, as well as prominent figures from international modernisms.
The river in which one swims with one's eyes, by Genor Sales
Genor Sales' (1984, Goiânia, GO) first exhibition in São Paulo, "The River in Which One Swims with One's Eyes," presents a unique collection of watercolors depicting objects related to the containment, treatment, and storage of water, such as amphorae, clay filters, and hydrants, as well as fish and elements related to fishing, against watery backgrounds evoked by the pictorial technique itself.
According to curator Divino Sobral, the artist unfolds the same subject into small groupings of works, creating sequences that explore specific topics. From a formal point of view, the collection marks an expansion of the artist's chromatic palette, moving away from the murky and brownish colors previously used to approach the blues, greens, yellows, and oranges illuminated by the twilight light of the Goiás savanna.
The paintings are constructed with light and delicate gestures, which in some places reveal the support beneath the paint, bringing the pictorial gesture closer to writing and highlighting the manual skill. By articulating memory, territory, and other forms of perceiving the world, Genor Sales' work is anchored in traditional knowledge and the relationship with beings of the forest and waters.
Vectors
The group exhibition "Vectors" brings together a significant collection of works spanning different periods of modern and contemporary art, connecting names linked to fundamental movements and groups in the history of art in Brazil, such as Concretism, Neoconcretism, the Ruptura Group, and the 1980s generation, as well as figures from international modernism.
Curated by Antonio Gonçalves Filho, cultural director of Almeida & Dale, the exhibition is divided into three sections — sculpture, painting, and photography and printmaking — and occupies both spaces of the gallery on Rua Fradique Coutinho. In the sculpture section, works by Sergio Camargo, Lygia Pape, Tunga, and Victor Brecheret highlight different ways of thinking about three-dimensionality as a field of experimentation.
The section dedicated to painting brings together artists such as Aluísio Carvão, Arcangelo Ianelli, Mira Schendel, Paulo Pasta, and Rodrigo Andrade, in dialogue with international figures like Lucio Fontana and Frank Stella. In the third section, photography and printmaking, works by Miguel Rio Branco and Hiroshi Sugimoto expand the notion of image, with a Metaesquema by Hélio Oiticica establishing connections between the sets.
Taken together, the works do not propose a definitive genealogy, but rather an overview that articulates historical readings and unexpected relationships, highlighting the persistence of these vectors as active forces in contemporary production.
