The artist Kika Carvalho opens his new solo show – “Overseas” – this Thursday, the 7th, at Eva Klabin House Museum. The exhibition is curated by Lucas Albuquerque and brings together around 20 works – including new works – including paintings, cyanotypes, installations and collages developed from the artist's in-depth research into the color blue and its function in material, historical and social relations. over the centuries.

The exhibition is the result of a partnership between Casa Museu Eva Klabin and Instituto Inclusartiz, through the “Éden” artistic residency program, which aims to investigate the house and the collection resulting from Eva Klabin's eight decades of collecting (1903- 1991). Boasting one of the most important collections of classical art in Brazil – covering a period of almost 50 centuries – the union of the two institutions is based on the desire to invite contemporary artists to promote new frequencies within the house and the collection through creation. of unpublished works, made from research carried out together with the curatorial and museology teams.

For the curator, the opportunity to work with the Casa Museu Eva Klabin collection allows us to think about curatorial and research projects capable of moving contemporary production to other places of significance, expanding the dialogue between times and the critical fortunes of the invited artists.

“Carvalho's work was chosen precisely in this place: to enable the revelation of data inherent to his interest in poetic research, which is sometimes sublimated by the speed of everyday life. In this sense, the period of research with such a rich collection establishes other times, both of production and perception, which the artist, in turn, aims to subvert in her occupation. Promote new readings not only of the present, but also of the past, in a spiral way of thinking”, highlights Lucas.

“Ultramar” features works deeply influenced by the artist’s experience in Luanda, capital of Angola, where she participated in an artistic residency in 2022, this being her first crossing of the Atlantic. For this exhibition, Carvalho also prepared new works that reflect his experiments with techniques other than painting, such as cyanotype and analog photography processes. These works also propose a confrontation between the symbolic use of the color blue in ancient Egypt and its subsequent valorization in Christian sacred images, through direct dialogue with items present in the collection of the Casa Museu Eva Klabin
