As a result of a childhood on the Amazon riverside, Gaia shows the creations resulting from the union of an observant child and an exquisite artist, coexisting within its interior. On July 06th the opening of “Transcendences”, individual artist Oswald Gaia No. Aloísio Magalhães Museum of Modern Art - BREAST, in Recife. Curated by Vânia Leal, the exhibition takes place as a deep dive into the river of memory of the artist from Pará.
Born in an Amazonian riverside community, Osvaldo Gaia was a child who observed those around him, especially his grandfather, a fisherman, who produced his own paneiros, his canoes and oars and wove fishing nets. Genuinely artisanal craft, however, in this scenario used as a subsistence tool. It was from these survival practices that, within the child, the plastic artist was born who today populates the rooms of the Recife Museum of Modern Art with works in wood, polycarbonate, threads, acetate, bronze and blankets. Following the learning of his fellow countrymen, Gaia builds and reconstructs forms to which he references; hunting traps, boat structures, bird wing structures, the jaws of animal carcasses, riverine machinery, fishing rods and hooks.
In “Transcendências” Osvaldo Gaia presents something beyond his works of art, but a continuous memory that reflects the daily life of riverside people in the face of observations in the artist's childhood in which the real and the imaginary penetrate each other in a discontinuous way. In the words of curator Vânia Leal: “Gaia is like a fisherman: he casts a fishing net into your memories. This welcomes, selects and collects his living and affective sculptures in constant construction.”
