Fascinated by images since he received his first camera at the age of eight, Thomas Farkas (1924-2011) built horizons of those who see beyond, whether in photography, cinema or business. Exploring light and shadow, perceiving beauty and humanity are among the peculiarities of Farkas's gaze. Image and Sound Museum of Ceará, an institution that is part of the Public Network of Cultural Equipment of the Secretariat of Culture of Ceará, with management in partnership with the Mirante Institute of Culture and Art, is holding the exhibition Thomaz Farkas – beauty before the eyes, which will open on September 21, 2024, at 18 pm, at the MIS square.
The exhibition offers different spaces to tell the story of those who looked with attention and curiosity at the country and the people who welcomed them. Curated by Simonetta Persichetti e Rubens Fernandes Junior, the event celebrates Farkas' centenary. Born in Hungary and passionate about Brazil, he was one of the best-known names in Brazilian photography in the second half of the 20th century. The curators, film director Lauro Escorel, and photographer and Thomaz's son, João Farkas, will be present during the opening.
Through his work as a photographer, director and film producer, Farkas sought to discover beauty wherever it could be found. It was within this universe that he developed and practiced the uniqueness of his art. “To photograph is to look and remember,” said Thomaz in an interview recorded in 2006. When asked if the Brazil he portrayed during the inauguration of Brasília in April 1960 had changed much half a century later, he replied: “No, because I see with my heart. I see through what enters my heart.”
For the curators, Thomaz Farkas's style is on the border between classical photography and modern photography, seeking new forms of visuality and creating his own way of photographing. One of the pioneers and leading exponents of photography in Brazil, Farkas is recognized for his photographic production, having held exhibitions in the most important cultural centers and museums in Brazil and abroad, and also for his vast and innovative film production, which became known as the “Farkas Caravan”.
“Getting to know Brazil through his eyes is always an enriching experience. A careful look, images that appear to us showing what our eyes alone, or those unaccustomed to seeing, would be incapable of perceiving. What is most fascinating about his photographs is the sense of fun, as if discovering the invisible were a great game for Farkas, as if he were happy to be able to offer us a surprising detail in each image”, say the curators, who lived with and learned from him.
The MIS highlights the importance of holding this exhibition in the month in which Farkas would have turned one hundred. “The Museum of Image and Sound of Ceará is honored to hold the exhibition Thomaz Farkas – beauty before our eyes on the centennial of a professional who became a reference for image culture in Brazil. Farkas also paved the way for many other professionals in photography and cinema to follow. This is a great opportunity for more people from Ceará to get to know him,” said MIS CE director Silas de Paula.
