Details

O Correios Rio de Janeiro Cultural Center gets the exposure About the Void, show of Marlene Stamm which presents 6 series with approximately 652 watercolors and drawings and an installation that investigate the force impregnated in objects with the passage of time.

Curated by Isabel Portella, the large number of works that make up each of the series highlights the artist's manual, repetitive and solitary work, which she produces in an almost obsessive way to show the unpredictability that invites us to look at what almost no one sees.

The “6 Hours of Light” series consists of more than 530 watercolors of matches, whose burning time totals the time that gives the work its name. In the process of creating the series, time stretches: 6 hours become weeks in the actions of striking the match, timing the flame and painting the charcoal, repeated by the artist meticulously, hundreds of times, recording what is left of the match and the memory of the light.

The installation “Impermanence,” which occupies the center of the room, is made up of 27 plaster sculptures of books stacked on top of old furniture. The books are colorless, contentless blocks, symbolizing the fragility of memories and accumulated knowledge, which gradually fade and gather dust.

In the “Empty” series, the artist paints 74 watercolors of envelopes without letters, addressee or sender, inviting the observer to look for elements that may indicate some kind of narrative and meaning for each of them. By recording objects that are almost disposable, the artist highlights the effort that simple things and stories make to last, seeking to preserve them.

This is the artist's third exhibition in Rio de Janeiro this year. In March, Stamm opened “Before Night Comes” at Sesc Teresópolis and in April, she participated in the group show “A House All Yours” at the Eva Klabin House Museum. In parallel with the artist's exhibition, the Centro Cultural Correios Rio de Janeiro is also presenting exhibitions by artists Andrey Rossi, Júlio Vieira and Thiago Toes in its other exhibition rooms.
