Exhibition "Without Words", by Vânia Mignone

A Triangle House We are extremely pleased to present Speechless, new solo exhibition of Vania Mignone, celebrating 30 years of partnership between the artist and the gallery.

Vânia Mignone constructs images that seem to emerge from a place that is simultaneously intimate and impersonal, as if they came from a memory that doesn't entirely belong to anyone and, precisely for that reason, could belong to everyone. In her work, the world is made of fragments: trees, roads, birds, human figures, lampposts, towers, horizons, and words. Nothing is offered as a closed narrative. Each painting is rather a focal point of tension, where the banal, the dreamlike, the affective, and the unsettling coexist with a disturbing naturalness.

There is something profoundly unique in the way Mignone transforms painting into a psychic event. Her scenes have the clarity of a snapshot and, at the same time, the instability of a memory in formation. They are images that seem to have been torn from the flow of life, but which, when painted, cease to record the world to reveal its most ambiguous zone: that in which the familiar becomes strange, in which tenderness coexists with threat, in which humor and discomfort occupy the same space. Her work does not describe reality; it displaces it, opening fissures through which desire, fear, vertigo, silence, and wakefulness escape.

The words don't function as captions, but as the emotional material of the image: “NIGHT”, “LONELINESS”, “ALWAYS A DANGER”, “ON THE BEND OF THE ROAD”, “PARENTS OF THE FUTURE”, “THE ABYSS”, “WE WAIT”, “CLOUD”, and “EVENTS”. They don't explain what we see; they contaminate what we see. At the same time, trees, roads, birds, towers, and human figures appear as emblems of inner states, almost as if each element had been purified until it became a sign of a mental or affective experience. There is a rare precision in this operation: Vânia doesn't illustrate feelings, she invents a form for them.

The way these works assert their presence is also very powerful. The use of MDF and collage gives each painting a very unique materiality, reinforcing the feeling that we are facing dense, compact, almost encapsulated images, as if each one held a small inner theater. To see them is less to decipher them than to enter their atmosphere. And perhaps that is precisely where the strength of Vânia Mignone's work lies: in the ability to make painting a place where the visible is never exhausted in what it shows, because it is always vibrating with what it can barely express.
