Sample Secrets and spells de Thiago Barbalho will have approximately 40 works produced this year, such as the large drawing “The Perfect Pie”, over two meters high (image below), as well as medium and small format drawings – in which he uses colored pencils, pastels, pens and markers, acrylic and oil paint –, and sculptures, made in various materials such as 3D printing, resin and fiberglass, acrylic, fabric and automotive paint.
The exhibition also features works by the artist with elements characteristic of the culture of Jardim do Seridó, in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte, his mother's homeland, such as cave paintings, the semi-arid landscape and artisanal textile production techniques. One example is the tapestry “Futuro” (2024), below, measuring two meters high by one and a half meters wide, developed in conjunction with the collective Flor de Kantuta, made up of Bolivian women weavers based in São Paulo.
“I wanted to bring together a variety of references, from the dams and rivers of our land, to the handicrafts of Rio Grande do Norte, with their tapestries and quilts. But I wanted to avoid the clichés associated with northeastern art in general,” says Thiago. Between July 16 and September 29, 2024, curator Catarina Duncan and artist Thiago Barbalho established an email exchange as a method of investigative monitoring and dialogue around the artist’s work.
The conversation covers Barbalho's artistic practice and the development of the exhibition, while also opening up space for digressions and personal accounts, including current news, dreams and research references. The correspondence was printed and will be available at the exhibition.
