A Mario de Andrade Library presents the exhibition “Machine roomindividual of Andre Azevedo (PR, 1977), with critical text by Ana Paula Lopes e Thierry FreitasThe exhibition will be on display at the Tula Pilar Ferreira Space.
For over a decade, the artist has used the typewriter as a central instrument in his practice. The mechanical sound of the keys – repetitive and rhythmic – is integral to the construction process of the works, formed by extensive typographic fields that, from a distance, assume geometric or figurative configurations and, up close, reveal themselves as compositions of reorganized letters, words, and codes. The process involves repetition, recombination, and deviation, incorporating error as a constitutive part of the work.
References to the industrial and corporate world are also part of her practice. The sewing machine and the use of fabrics are added to the typewriter, expanding the material possibilities of the work. Based on the logic of the weave, writing is treated as a compositional element and image.
For the Mário de Andrade Library, the artist developed a large-scale work that occupies the central space of the room. The piece is constructed from ribbons previously used in typewriters, collected over the past few years. Faced with this dense accumulation of printed words, Azevedo intervenes again, covering fragments, superimposing layers, and establishing connections between distinct passages, like someone intertwining threads to form a vast network.
By removing the typewriter – now outside the functional circuit of everyday writing – from its original function, the artist works with analog devices to consider changes in language over time.
