O Correios Rio de Janeiro Cultural Center presents the exhibition Roberto Burle Marx by his friendsThis exhibition reveals a little-known facet of one of Brazil's greatest creators. Far beyond the landscape architect who transformed the relationship between art and nature in Brazil, the show highlights Burle Marx as a host, collector, friend, and humanist, evidencing his profound connection to the cultural diversity that marked his life.
With an immersive character, the exhibition brings together approximately 150 photographs, historical documents, scenographic reproductions, interactive installations, and sensory environments that guide the visitor through a narrative constructed from the memories of people who lived with Burle Marx, especially in his last years. The proposal shifts the focus from the monumental artist to reveal his human, domestic, and spiritual dimension.
Conceived by the Jewish Memorial of Vassouras, the exhibition explores little-known episodes from Burle Marx's biography, such as his family origins—son of a German Jew and a Catholic teacher from Pernambuco of French descent—his time in Germany during his youth, and the impact of the rise of Nazism on his paternal family. Previously unseen photographs and historical documents help to understand how this multicultural heritage resonated in his worldview and artistic production, especially in his later years.
