Exhibition “Resonances of Gesture” by Lena Peixer

Upon turning 20, the Badesc Cultural Foundation pays tribute to one of the artists who helped build the institution's history. The visual artist Lena Peixer inaugurates the unprecedented exhibition “Resonances of Gesture"and it goes on to give its name to Space 3 of Badesc Cultural Foundation, in recognition of their artistic career and contribution to the consolidation of the institution and the visual arts in Santa Catarina.

Curated by Denilson AntonioAccording to the Art Coordinator of the Badesc Cultural Foundation, the exhibition features approximately 50 drawings and engravings. "The collection references Lena's roughly 50 years of artistic activity and was conceived specifically to occupy Space 3," the curator emphasizes.

Instead of a conventional installation, “Resonances of Gesture” will transform the exhibition space into a large-scale installation. Four projectors will display drawings and prints on the walls, while the movements and expressions of the visitors will become integrated into the projected images, creating a dialogue between the artwork, the architecture, and the public.

“As a graphic artist, working with drawing and printmaking, I considered the best way to exhibit my work. I then envisioned a site-specific exhibition, a specific location where the artwork directly engages with the architecture of the place. The gestures and expressions of the public can become part of the strokes, lines, and subtext of the art displayed there,” says Lena Peixer.

For Camila Steckert, General Director of the Badesc Cultural Foundation, the tribute recognizes the artist's contribution to the Foundation's development. "During the first few years, from 2006 to 2013, Lena served as Director of Arts, contributing to establishing a program committed to contemporary art production, audience development, and the strengthening of visual arts in Santa Catarina," she emphasizes.

The curator emphasizes that in honoring Lena, not only is the history of an artist celebrated, but also the history of an encounter between the artist's trajectory and the history of the Foundation. “More than presenting a retrospective, this installation reveals the relevance of a body of work built over decades. In times marked by an excess of images, Lena remains faithful to what is essential: a line, a cut, a surface, and the infinite capacity of these elements to produce visual sensations,” shares Denilson Antonio.

Lena Peixer holds a degree in Fine Arts from the Regional University Foundation of Blumenau (FURB) and develops works focused on drawing and printmaking, investigating line, gesture, and graphic expressiveness in different media. She has participated in exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, completed an artistic residency in Córdoba, Argentina, was part of the 5th Brazilian Drawing Exhibition and the 14th Curitiba International Biennial, and has works in important public collections. She also worked on the implementation of the educational sector of the Victor Meirelles Museum, was administrator of the Pedro Paulo Vecchietti Municipal Gallery and the Santa Catarina Historical Museum, and director of Arts at the Badesc Cultural Foundation between 2006 and 2013.

The opening of “Resonances of Gesture,” which can be visited until September 17, 2026, is part of the commemorative program for the 20th anniversary of the Badesc Cultural Foundation and also marks the official inauguration of the Lena Peixer Space 3. The mansion is located at Rua Visconde de Ouro Preto, 216, in the center of Florianópolis, and free visits can be made from Monday to Friday, from 13 pm to 19 pm, and from August 22nd, on Saturdays, from 10 am to 16 pm.
