Exhibition “The Two Sides of the Window” by Daniel Senise

After 32 years, the Imperial Palace is hosting a new solo exhibition of... Daniel Senise. titled The two sides of the window and curated by Pollyanna QuintellaThe exhibition brings together 59 works produced between 2000 and the present day, including eight previously unseen pieces—four created in 2026 and another four, produced between 2024 and 2026, that had never left the artist's studio.

The works will occupy all the rooms on the first floor of the Imperial Palace, grouped "by affinity," not necessarily by series or chronological order, says Daniel Senise, who participated intensely in the entire process of setting up the exhibition and will be present at the opening.

This is a rare opportunity for the public to immerse themselves in the universe of the last 26 years of the Rio de Janeiro-born artist, who has been based in São Paulo since 2022. On display are works from several of his well-known series, such as “Museums and Galleries,” “Books,” “Prodrome,” and the ten pieces from “Biographer”—the latter never before shown together. At the center of the last room will be the interactive work “National Gallery” (2014), in which the public will see, through a small hole, the image reconstructed in miniature by the artist of the English art institution.

The exhibition features large works, such as “Vai que nós levamos as partes que te faltam” (2008), in the Mestre Valentim Room, measuring 10 meters long by 1,20 meters high, a composition of watercolors by Daniel Senise that reproduce, one by one, the wooden planks of the hallway in his residence in Rio de Janeiro. Upon closer inspection, the public can see that it is a “floor plan,” with “the exits to the TV room, the living room, and the kitchen,” explains the artist.

In the Gomes Freire Room, there is “Misty Peach Vision Petal” (2004), measuring 2,15 meters high by 6,45 meters long, produced from “the transfer of dust, residue and marks accumulated on the studio floor to the canvas,” explains Pollyana Quintella in the expanded captions that will be in the exhibition. “The work directly incorporates the traces of the space where it was produced.

In the Academia dos Seletos room – the seventh room in the exhibition – is the work “Arrangement in gray and silver” (2019), measuring 2,44 meters high by 7,50 meters long, made with carpets burned in the fire suffered by the Villa-Lobos Theater, in Copacabana, in 2011.

From the “Museums and Galleries” series, the following works can be seen: “National Museum of Fine Arts” (2016), measuring 150 x 300 cm, in the Gomes Freire Room; “Untitled (MAM Rio)”, 2022, measuring 150 x 325 cm; “Untitled (Sistine Chapel)”, 2025, 200 x 293 cm; “Untitled (Scrovegni Chapel)”, 2025, 200 x 293 cm; “Untitled (Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection)”, 2021, 150 x 400 cm; and “Untitled (Richter at Dia Beacon)”, 2022, 150 x 250 cm, in the Throne Room.

Throughout the exhibition, the public will also see a series of small paintings – Daniel Senise's "little paintings," experiments he conducts in his studio – as well as texts by Pollyana Quintella, the "expanded captions," which comment on some of the works or the overall environment.
