Exhibition "The Garden Also Dreams", by Clara Fernandes

Observation of simple everyday elements and a sensitive look at the cycles of nature are present in the works of the artist Clara Fernandes in the exhibition “The garden also dreams."Curated by Victoria Beatriz, the unprecedented exhibition opens on..." Composed of three-dimensional objects, mostly made of iron and plaster frameworks, as plant supports, the unprecedented exhibition presents 16 works, with varying dimensions and densities, developed by the artist since 2001. Among the works presented is the installation 'Efêmera', which was inspired by the white flowers that emerge from the Embiruçu tree, a plant present in the garden of the artist's house and studio in the Ratones neighborhood, in Florianópolis.

“These flowers, which appear at night and remain for only a short time, stand out in the chromatic scale of the entire environment. And the works bring a contrast between full and empty, light and heavy, even though they are the same elements,” explains Clara.

The curator highlights that the artist is always observing how trees grow, how they need water, how the entire system needs to function for that to happen. “Clara observes how organisms create conditions for other life to exist. More than representing nature, she is interested in understanding its ways of acting, a technology of life itself. That's why I find Clara's sensitivity to ecology beautiful. We can perceive certain forms, certain movements, that will later contribute to the very fabric of the works,” shares Victoria.

This will be the fourth time the artist has participated in exhibitions at the Badesc Cultural Foundation. She has had two solo exhibitions, “LUME” in 2009 and “Epifanics” in 2015, and the group exhibition “Exaptations – Garden” in 2024.

For Clara Fernandes, occupying the garden of the Badesc Cultural Foundation is an exercise that involves both the challenges of the space and weather conditions, as well as the possibilities of expanding the reach of the exhibition. “When I was invited to this show in the garden, I felt the challenge, during the winter, subject to wind and rain, at a time in my personal life when I'm seeking stability and permanence, given my youth. But when I went out into the outdoor space of my studio, I realized all this creation that I maintain, a truly expanded life, and I thought about making the Foundation's garden a visit from my own garden,” the artist adds.

The exhibition “The Garden Also Dreams” can be visited until October 15, 2026, Monday to Friday, from 13 pm to 19 pm. The Badesc Cultural Foundation is located at Rua Visconde de Ouro Preto, 216, in the center of Florianópolis/SC.
