The gallery ORA is pleased to present the solo exhibition “Nina Horikawa: The Hours of Truce”, featuring previously unseen works on translucent voile and extensions of the series of small paintings begun in 2022. In the exhibition, the artist investigates the relationships between the body and encounters as a complex, contradictory, and psychologically charged field.
According to curator Mariana Leme, “during the hours of truce — when daily, semi-automatic tasks are suspended — there can be room for estrangement. The artist invites us to take a step back and to distrust everything that presents itself in its entirety, be it a scene, a painting, or a statement.”
“The transparency of the voile,” in the curator’s words, “causes a painting to be contaminated by its surroundings: the concrete of the back wall, the pillars of the room, the floor, the other paintings; above all, the bodies of the people walking by, overlapping the images.” By involving the viewer in her works, Horikawa intertwines the states of pause and contemplation, common to those who see a painting, with a feeling of alertness; the imminence of a transformative event.
