A Gentle Carioca, in collaboration with Goodman Gallery, is pleased to announce
the artist's first solo exhibition Misheck Masamvu (1980, Zimbabwe) in
Brazil. “Show me how ruins make a home” presents the artistic practice of
Masamvu to the Brazilian public through a set of new understandings about
the clashes and negotiations with the institutionalities built by the projects
colonialism that impacted the Global South.

The artist presents a series of new paintings, developed over two
months in residence at the Casa de Pedra space in Rio de Janeiro. The opening takes place
on April 2nd, at 17pm, at the A Gentil Carioca gallery, in São Paulo. The event also
celebrates the expansion of the gallery space and takes place in parallel with the “Travessa
Open.”
Considered one of the most significant and pioneering contemporary artists in
Zimbabwe, the artist seeks to create poetic spaces and thicknesses for realities
diverse in his paintings, leading a thought on the composition of the subjects
politicians as tools for social transformation.
The works in “Show me how ruins make a home” reflect on the ideas of
sacrifice and renewal in the context of belonging and self-preservation. Suggests
that by removing one obstacle, space is created for others to thrive.
This process involves maintaining a person's identity while browsing
by threats that may, over time, become obsolete. Explore the fluidity of
family roles and relationships, highlighting the possibility of replacing
titles and the shared nature of affiliations. Ultimately, it advocates growth and protection, allowing others access to diverse resources without
fail to safeguard its own integrity.

Misheck Masamvu's paintings propose scenes, between figuration and abstraction,
made from successive layers of colors that express the processes
between the repressed desire for transformation and the paths outlined for liberation
of the subjects. The questions present in his works affirm art as a territory of
reflection on the need for change and renewal, and suggests that certain
structures need to die and be left aside, so that others can be born and
blossom.
