Exhibition "Living in Color"

A Flexa is pleased to announce its tenth exhibition, Living in color, which is part of the gallery's 2026 program. The exhibition is curated by Luisa duarte e Daniela AvellarThe exhibition, accompanied by a critical text by Renato Menezes, curator of the Pinacoteca de SP, proposes to consider color in art beyond its strictly formal dimension.

Starting from the understanding that colors are influenced by experience, subjectivity, and daily life, the collective exhibition understands the entire color palette as an active field, capable of producing different affects and perceptions. Color appears, in the assembled works, as a structuring force of the works and the experience proposed to the public, whose exhibition design is inspired by the work of the Mexican architect. Looking back in time, it's surprising to learn that ancient Greek statues were originally multicolored. Ultraviolet light analyses, conducted in the 1980s, revealed traces of pigments on the marbles now seen as white. Weathering has erased these colors, present in details such as skin, faces, and ornaments.

By challenging the Western tradition that has historically relegated color to a place of excess or even superficiality, "Living in Color" proposes a shift. Moving from ornament to occupy the space of thought, color is capable of both filling the exhibition space and manifesting itself in the various grouped works, prompting the viewer to reflect on the symbolic meanings contained in the chromatic experience. The exhibition's title is inspired by the homonymous essay published by [author's name]. Lygia Pape In 1988, the artist reflects on the relationship between color and vernacular housing in Rio de Janeiro.

Bringing together artists from different generations, the exhibition is organized into three sections that explore distinct approaches to color. In one, chromatic investigation is carried out through empirical observation and subtle variations in tone, approaching an almost tactile experience. In another, color emerges from everyday signs and popular architecture, incorporating visual references from urban and vernacular contexts. The third section questions a certain prudishness regarding color. In this group, saturated and vibrant colors appear, reminding us of chromatic complexity and its capacity to produce energetic connections.

The exhibition thus proposes an expanded approach to color, understood as a living experience situated between sight, body, and the world.
