Exhibition "Look and See – MAM São Paulo Visits Sesc Bom Retiro"

The exhibition proposes a unique encounter between works from the collection of Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo and works from the collection of Sesc Bom Retiro, starting from the relocation of the works of MAM Sao Paulo to visit a building entirely occupied by a collection that presents itself in multiple ways. By bringing the works of MAM São Paulo into this context, the curatorial approach highlights different ways of showing, organizing, and making collections public, relating institutional practices, regimes of visibility, and modes of mediation.

The proposal is structured around two central questions: what happens when one decides to preserve, care for, and make public a collection of works? And what is there to perceive and learn in a work of art? These questions guide the exhibition's trajectory and permeate the spatial, narrative, and educational decisions of the project. The collection is understood as a historical and social construct, whose existence is fully realized in the encounter with the public, when the works circulate, are recontextualized, and activate new interpretations.

By placing collections in dialogue, the exhibition proposes a reflection on the social function of cultural institutions and on aesthetic enjoyment as a relational experience. The materiality of the works, the contexts of production, and the mediation and accessibility devices broaden the possibilities of perception and knowledge. Mire Veja invites the public to experience the collections as a living field, constantly updated, based on their bodies, their language, and their own life experiences.

Mirela Estelles is a cultural mediator who investigates the implications of storytelling in education within museums and art exhibitions. She studied Communication of Body Arts at PUC-SP and specialized in Art Languages ​​at the MariAntonia University Center, where she began research and activities for the project Stories to See and Hear (2011–). With experience in contemporary art, education, books and reading, childhood cultures, intangible heritage, and museum audiences, she curates exhibitions and educational projects in schools, bookstores, libraries, museums, and other cultural institutions, paying attention to accessibility and diversity aspects in the cultural management of multidisciplinary teams. Currently, she coordinates the education area of ​​the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, where she has worked since 2009.

Valquíria Prates investigates the cultural mediation of visual arts and literature in dialogue with research, writing, curating, and education. She holds degrees in Literature and Pedagogy, a master's degree in Public Accessibility Policies from USP (University of São Paulo), and a doctorate in Arts from Unesp (São Paulo State University), with the thesis "How to Do It Together: Art and Education in Cultural Mediation." Her work articulates academic knowledge and collaborative practices in different territories and social contexts. Currently, she develops projects with the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, the Moreira Salles Institute, the Roberto Marinho Foundation, Inhotim, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Ceará, and the Institute of Contemporary Art of Ouro Preto.

The Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM São Paulo) is an institution dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Founded in 1948, it maintains a collection focused on Brazilian art from the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition to exhibitions, it is involved in research, conservation, and educational activities.
