Details

O Tomie Ohtake Institute It is one of the few cultural centers in Brazil that bear the name of a female artist in its title. Based on this data, it is essential to keep the artist's legacy alive, which is also due to the work of her children. Be it the sinuous forms and bright colors typical of the artist's production, which influence Ruy Ohtake's architectural project for this Institute, or even the democratic and experimental character of his work that appears in Ricardo Ohtake's role as cultural manager - including the management of this institution since its inauguration in 2001.

Tomie Ohtake's works have already occupied all of the Institute's exhibition spaces – notably this room, affectionately titled the Permanent Room. Even so, given the artist's more than 60 years of production, the possibilities for re-signifying her work are inexhaustible, as well as revealing layers of the artist that remain unpublished.

Masks and Flowers: the roles of Tomie Ohtake exhibits for the first time a selection whose focus is not the works, but rather the papers, documents and magazines found in the artist's personal collection, in her home-studio, also designed by Ruy, and where she lived from 1970 until her death, in 2015.

Tomie Ohtake's home-studio, rarely open to the public and occasionally mediated by Ricardo's stories, has part of its drawers opened through this exhibition. Masks and Flowers It is an opportunity to present a still little-known dimension of Tomie Ohtake, her intangible legacy that manifests itself in the memories of those who knew her and in the memory of a tireless daily life.

The exposure Masks and Flowers It was only possible with the support and encouragement of institutions and people who work to ensure that Tomie Ohtake's memory remains alive. The Tomie Ohtake Institute thanks the Ministry of Culture, via the Culture Incentive Law, Brazil, Union and Reconstruction – Federal Government, as well as Aché, BCG and Verde Asset, for the fundamental partnership. Furthermore, we highlight the important research by Carolina de Angelis, Casimiro Xavier de Mendonça, Miguel Chaia and Olívio Tavares de Araújo, and we thank Jane dos Santos Lima, Rosa Maria dos Santos Lima and José Carlos Pezybyn for their hospitality and care for the house.
