O Correios Rio de Janeiro Cultural Center presents Golden Apple, new exhibition of Thiago Toes curated by Daniela Avellar. The exhibition presents paintings and drawings that offer an immersion into the artist's mystical universe.
Inspired by the golden apple, a tarot symbol associated with prosperity, achievement and success, the exhibition explores issues related to spirituality and self-knowledge, transforming painting and drawing into a kind of ritual. In addition to tarot, the works on display also reference various symbols and archetypes from mythology.
Introspective, most of the works are fragmented self-portraits, featuring parts of Toes' face and hands. The artist's body is often covered by caps or balaclavas, simultaneously illustrating the strength of social codes and the symbolic protection of these accessories, which refer to the idea of armor.
In the exhibition room at the Post Office, some paintings are supported by three-dimensional structures, recapturing the idea of the body and occupying space. Through signs, just like in tarot, Toes' works seek to show the observer a path of reflection and contemplation of that which is invisible.
The exhibition will be on display until October 26, alongside shows by artists Ana Zveibil, Andrey Rossi, Júlio Vieira and Marlene Stamm, which occupy the other exhibition rooms at the Centro Cultural Correios Rio de Janeiro.
