Mucki Botkay translates the language of painting into meticulously embroidered planes with hand-colored glass beads. Her compositions, of great optical complexity, are built upon a solid chromatic palette developed by the artist herself and by subtle variations in the size, shape, orientation, and density of the beads, causing the image to oscillate between a unified whole and thousands of individual points of light.

Dense tangles of mangrove roots and still lifes of refined composition shimmer in light and rhythm, with surfaces brought to life by the accumulation of tiny, shimmering beads. Botkay's tapestries expand the possibilities of painting inherited from Modernism by placing questions related to color, surface, and abstraction in dialogue with material traditions of artisanal practices such as tapestry, mosaic, and embroidery.

Inspired by the coastal landscapes of Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, as well as the ecosystems of the Atlantic Forest, Botkay translates organic forms into immersive fields of color. Gardens, forests, flowers, vines, waves, and bottles emerge in his images before gradually dissolving into rhythmic networks of dots and particles that transition between representation and abstraction as the viewer approaches their intricate surfaces.

Trained in decorative arts at the École Supérieure des Ensembles in Geneva in the late 1970s, Botkay arrived at her current practice after decades of experimentation with textile design, fashion, printing, and embroidery. The works she produces today are developed in collaboration with a network of highly skilled local embroiderers, reflecting both her deep connection to the territory and her ongoing commitment to strengthening artistic communities in Brazil.

The intensive beadwork embroidery process reinforces the themes present in the artwork itself. Each bead accumulates to form large structures such as tree canopies, root systems, and growth rings, which record the passage of time. Growth, repetition, and duration are simultaneously the theme and process of a research project that expands the language of painting through texture, movement, and materiality.

Mucki Botkay was born in 1958 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She held her first solo exhibition in 2025 at Galatea Salvador in Salvador, Brazil. Anat Ebgi presented the artist's work for the first time in the United States earlier this year during Frieze Los Angeles. Botkay lives and works in Rio de Janeiro.
