SESI São José dos Campos presents the exhibition J. Borges – The Master of Woodcut, until September 30th, with free visits. The popular imagination of the Northeast is present in symbols and figures carved by the artist, who turns 88 in December.

Curated by Angelo Filizola, the exhibition features a collection of 44 woodcuts, eight of which were previously unpublished (with their respective matrices), along with the 28 most important works from J. Borges' career. The themes portrayed symbolize the artist's life trajectory, considered by playwright Ariano Suassuna as the “best popular engraver in Brazil”.

Visitors can enjoy works from different phases of its history, identified by the themes: Travel for Work and Business, Countryside Services, Cotton Planting, Forró Nordestino, Sugarcane Planting, Caruaru Fair, Carnival in Pernambuco and Festa dos Apaixonados. Popular poetry also has a place in the exhibition: a space dedicated especially to cordel literature. A cordelist for more than 50 years, J. Borges' verses deal with everyday life in the countryside, political events, legendary facts, folkloric and picturesque aspects of life.

“I am very happy with this exhibition about my woodcut work. And I still want to live a long time, and what inspires me is life, it's continuation, it's movement. My work is what I see, what I feel”, comments J. Borges, who is a Living Heritage of Pernambuco, a title granted by the State. Borges has exhibited in France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, USA, Venezuela and Cuba, taught in France and the USA, illustrated books in several countries and was featured in The New York Times.

The exposure J. Borges – The Master of Woodcut It also features two works signed by Pablo Borges and Bacaro Borges, the artist's sons and apprentices, in addition to the screening of a biopic about Borges' life and work, written by journalist Eduardo Homem.

J. Borges draws directly on wood, balancing full and empty spaces with mastery, without the production of sketches, studies or drafts. The title is the motto for creating the drawing, where the cordel's own narratives have space in the expressive image of the engraving. The bottom of the matrix is carved around the figure that receives ink application, resulting in a white background and the image printed in color. Woodcuts do not present a rigorous concern with perspective or proportion.

The originality, irreverence and imaginary characters are notable in his works. The most recurring themes in his repertoire are the daily life of simple rural life, cangaço, love, punishments from heaven, mysteries, miracles, crimes and corruption, frolics, religiosity, roguery, in short, everything rich cultural universe of the northeastern people.

Sesi-SP's Culture Manager, Debora Viana, reinforces the importance of this exhibition being part of the circuit of traveling exhibitions at Galerias Espaços. “With the initiative, which began in Campinas, we reinforce the institution's commitment to promoting the cultural and artistic scene through public access to works, the creative process of national and international artists, reflection and experimentation. For Sesi-SP, the training of new audiences in the arts, the dissemination and access to culture for free, is extremely important. That’s why we develop and carry out projects in the most diverse areas and invite the public to enter the universe of knowledge and art”.

Produced and designed by Cactus Promoções e Produções, the exhibition J. Borges – The Master of Woodcut It has already been presented at the FIESP Cultural Center and at SESI units in Campinas, São José do Rio Preto and Itapetininga.
