The exposure "Ismael Nery: modern trapdedicated to the work of Ishmael Nery (1900–1934), painter, draftsman, architect, decorator, set designer and poet, investigates the trajectory of one of the most unsettling artists of Brazilian modernism.
Nery appropriated languages such as illustration, cubism, and surrealism, altering them based on his own anxieties. In paintings, drawings, and poems, the body became the place where he investigated the instability of identity, the fusion between genders, the corruption of matter, and the religious desire to overcome the limits of space and time.
The exhibition brings together around 230 works, including drawings, paintings, portraits, self-portraits, and compositions with sensual, often androgynous, and sometimes threatening human figures, operating on the border between affection and violence, carnal desire and the trauma of finitude.
Always recognized as one of the most unique voices in Brazilian art, Nery's trajectory is revisited by the Pinacoteca in this panoramic exhibition that presents his contradictions, his theoretical depth, and the radical nature of his inventions.
