"Irrational" Exhibition by Frederico Filippi

A Marli Matsumoto Contemporary Art opens first exhibition Irrational, individual of Frederico Filippi in the gallery. Curated by Germano DusháThe exhibition brings together different groups of previously unseen works in which chance, lack of control, and erratic gestures emerge as driving forces of creation.

In Irrational, Filippi articulates digital procedures, organic materials, and found objects to investigate the limits of rationality and control. Between the manufactured and the appropriated, vitality and destruction, his works take chaos not as an absence of order, but as a force capable of producing forms, images, and meanings.

In the series "One Head Inside Another," wooden objects are sculpted from digital models generated by random extrusion processes. Suspended in space, the undefined forms also function as real apiaries: during the exhibition period, they house live bees, incorporating them into the gallery's ecosystem.

The works bring two distinct logics into contact. On the outside, the randomness and imprecision of artificial forms; on the inside, the organized and intelligible codes of the swarm. The coexistence of the digital process, the sculpted material, and the activity of the bees makes transformation a constitutive part of the work.

In the paintings of the Perishable Notes series, collages made with images extracted from scientific vocabulary are superimposed on layers of beeswax and tar stains. The combination of materials gives rise to dense and unstable compositions, in which natural disorder seems to undermine the human attempt to understand and organize the world through rational systems.

Completing the exhibition is a set of ready-mades formed from fragments of tractors incinerated by the Federal Police during operations against illegal mining. Removed from their original context, these pieces assume a spectral presence: they are, at the same time, misshapen figures produced by the unpredictable action of fire and concrete vestiges of exploitation and environmental destruction.

In all the works, there is a rejection of calculation and scientific rationality in favor of a productive unintelligibility. “There is an aspect of lack of control, something that triggers an almost autonomous form. Instead of a rigid organization, there is always a viscosity: which is in the materials used and in the time in which the works are done, but which also gives shape to mental speculation and appears as language,” says Filippi.

By juxtaposing the organic and the digital, creation and annihilation, Irrational presents each work as the visible consequence of a thought process that pursues chaos as the defining principle of the world.
