It is with joy that the André Art Gallery headquarters of the new individual Philip Hallawell, an artist so closely linked to the history of space. The exhibition may serve as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the artist's first solo show, at André's own gallery, in the late 1970s. However, the event may also highlight the reasons why Hallawell holds such importance in Brazilian art.
Developing his image ID theory and publishing a book on the subject reveals the strong didactic character that the artist's career holds. His program on TV Cultura has already become a classic. Even with the enormous advancement of technology, Hallawell knows well the value of graphite on paper.
Another significant facet of Hallawell's work is his contribution to the documentation of visual arts exhibitions. For his first solo exhibition, the artist conceived and distributed a small, full-color brochure that served as a record of the paintings on display and included five critical texts, one of which was by Pietro Maria Bardi (1900-1999). This type of catalog was unusual, and the success of the endeavor led the gallery to continue this practice, which was also implemented in other spaces and is fundamental to the visual heritage of Brazilian art.
And perhaps the most important aspect of the current exhibition is the significant production linked to the dreamlike, symbolic, and imaginary aspects of Hallawell's work in national art. When we see the large-scale oil paintings, for example, exhibited today, we perceive the visual and conceptual quality of Hallawell's work, also present in the artist's drawings and pastels.
