Florianópolis is hosting a fully interactive exhibition designed to bring the public closer to Hassis's poetic universe.Hassis Brincante", an exhibition that is part of the project Hassis 100 Years and celebrates the artist's centenary, opens for visitation at Hassis Foundation, located in the Itaguaçu neighborhood, on the mainland of the capital of Santa Catarina. Admission is free.
Conceived by the curator Monique FonsecaThe exhibition proposes a sensory journey that invites visitors of all ages to experiment, imagine, and create. According to her, the proposal arose from the desire to transform the public's relationship with the artist's work through an experience that reflects Hassis's own universe. "Instead of a purely contemplative exhibition, I proposed a journey that could be experienced with the body, imagination, and curiosity," she shares.
From this perspective, the curator defined thematic cores that run through the artist's production: the sea, the circus, heroes, games, the mysteries of everyday life, and "The Door," a permanent work of the Hassis Foundation. These themes became the starting point for the creation of seven interactive stations, conceived as sensitive interpretations of Hassis's universe.
“More than just observing references to Hassis’s work, visitors are invited to explore, play, imagine, and create. The exhibition proposes an active relationship with the artist’s universe, transforming the visit into an experience of discovery, participation, and the construction of new memories,” explains the curator, who began conceiving the exhibition more than a year ago, during the planning of the Hassis centenary celebrations.
Among the works that engage with the exhibition's central themes are "The Fisherman" (1988), "The Door" (1967), the "The Circus" Series (1989), the "Comic Book" Series (1988), and the "Hassis Mar" collection, which inspire the exhibition's stations.
Interactivity and sustainability
The choice of materials also reinforces the educational and sustainable character of the exhibition. All the installations were made of cardboard, in addition to adhesives, magnetic pieces, and interactive supports. “Cardboard was chosen for its versatility and to reinforce the exhibition's commitment to sustainability. It is a material that sparks creativity and demonstrates that meaningful artistic experiences can arise from simplicity,” highlights the curator.
For Monique, the exhibition's supports are part of the curatorial narrative. By using recyclable materials and interactive elements, the exhibition invites each visitor to take an active stance, exploring, imagining, and creating. This choice also dialogues with the exhibition's title, "Hassis Brincante" (Hassis the Playful One). "The term 'playful one' synthesizes Hassis's relationship with the circus, street games, the daily life of the city, and the characters that populate his work," adds the curator.
