The Center in partnership with Martins & Montero announce the opening of the individual “Almost vintage reflections of a woman” de Gretta Sarfaty, on August 10th. Curated by Lui Tanaka, the exhibition marks the pre-launch of the artist's book by Act. and presents the series of paintings “Reflections of a Woman”, created by Sarfaty between 1991 and 1997.
This is the first time that the series of paintings has been presented in Brazil – the set was last shown to the public in London in 1997. The 1990s marked the artist's emphasis on figurative painting, previously focused on experimentation with video, photography and performance. The representation of the female body, a central point in Sarfaty's poetics, remains evident in the compositions of “Reflections of a Woman”, which cite the tradition of the female nude in European painting from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXth centuries.
The scenes of private daily life are cohabited by mirrors and their images: “It is as if, forgetting the world, things, the prosaic and clock time, one was allowed to enter each room painted by Gretta Sarfaty and there be alone with each nude woman portrayed by the artist”, states Lui Tanaka in the curatorial text.
The mirror image is frequent in other works by the artist, who states: “I like mirrors, I was fascinated by them. It's fascinating to see the image reflected and play with it. You can see different things. They joke and play with you. I was fascinated by that aspect.” Gretta Sarfaty is recognized for her experimental approach and engagement with gender issues. In her work, a recurring theme is the questioning of stereotypical representations of women and the search for the feminine essence, often expressed through the manipulation of self-portraits that metamorphose in the various media and supports in which Gretta explores her aesthetic investigations. Her work challenges current standards, provoking reflections on identity, power and femininity in contemporary times.
Her recent solo exhibitions include: “Not Your Usual Gretta Sarfaty”, at Central Galeria – São Paulo (2023); “Retransformations” at Auroras – São Paulo (2022); “Of Our Internal Empty Spaces” at Central Galeria – São Paulo (2019); among many others. Its collective exhibitions cover events such as: “Chão da Praça” at Pinacoteca – São Paulo (2023); “Fake. Language, Fracture, Fiction: Brazil-Portugal” at Sesc Pompeia – São Paulo (2020); “Dance Stories” at MASP – São Paulo (2020); “Journées Interdisciplinaires Sur l'art Corporel et performances” at the Center Georges Pompidou – Paris (1979); “Mitos Vadios” in São Paulo (1978); “13th Biennial – São Paulo” (1975); among many others. Her works are part of important public collections, such as: International Cultureel Centrum – Antwerp; Musée du Palais – Luxembourg; State Pinacoteca – São Paulo; Reina Sofia Museum (Madrid); and Serralves Foundation – Porto
