In his second solo exhibition at Red, Carlos Motta presents Gravity, a two-part project composed of a fragmented drawing made in graphite and a 14-minute video, commissioned by Vermelho and produced in São Paulo.
The drawing depicts an arid landscape where hundreds of humans urgently care for each other. The figures carefully hold, carry, and drag each other, visibly coping with the weight of their bodies, but determined to help each other persist in the midst of a dry desert, where only a few patches of green grass suggest hope of survival. Designed as a performance score, the drawing was used by Motta and eight local performers to produce a video that explores the themes of care, resistance, weight, gravity and survival.
Developed in close collaboration with the performers and filmed in the studio, the work presents a sequence of performative actions where the performers find cautious and tender ways to hold, carry and support the weight of their bodies for as long as possible, creating scenes of durational resistance. With an electronic soundtrack composed by Rio sound artist Luisa Lemgruber, Gravity asks the question: What does it take to sustain a life?
