From September 11th, Julio Vieira occupies the Correios Rio de Janeiro Cultural Center com Betweenspaces, an exhibition featuring oil and acrylic paintings and objects that explore new conceptions of landscape.
In large and medium-scale paintings, the artist superimposes and resizes multiple layers to create imaginary spaces. Going beyond the organic elements common in traditional landscape painting, the artist includes territorial, identity-based and subjective elements in his works. Layers and perspectives are shuffled, allowing the observer to see their surroundings in different ways.
Among the elements, all taken from real places, are references collected by Vieira during his daily travels through metropolises in Brazil and abroad and tributes to the iconography of artists he admires. According to curator Daniela Avellar, the in-between spaces are “spaces where we can perceive the emergence of the new.”
The artist also presents the “7 herbs” series of flags, where he explores issues of painting in three-dimensional format. Made of velvet and felt, each one features an embroidered image of an herb related to protective powers in Brazilian culture, creating a space for ritual and sensitivity.
Entrespaços will be on display until October 26, with free admission. The Centro Cultural Correios Rio de Janeiro will also simultaneously host exhibitions by artists Ana Zveibil, Andrey Rossi, Marlene Stamm and Thiago Toes.
