In the recent works (2023-2024), gathered here, the historical constructive matrix is challenged by the playful game of graphic interventions: waves, arcs, ellipses and circles, which compete for the flexible, accordion-shaped plane of the paper. Superimposed on these angular reliefs, each geometric scheme is affected by fold modulations, such as compression, distension or curve. The circle expands into an ellipse, the open arc compresses, the rectangle closes into a square. Sometimes this folded geometry suggests the continuity of the line in the void, at other times it outlines movement where there is none. By hiding and revealing the other side of the fold, between cracks and small ridges, the artist challenges the planar condition, at the intersection between drawing, painting and relief.

Since his first solo exhibition, “Catafractas” (Gal. Millan, 1991), in which his unique fold geometry expanded into architecture (walls, corridors, floor) his investigation of space on large scales is associated with the experience of dynamism and movement – constructive pillars. However, here it is a question of playful mobility and fluidity, marked by artisanal craftsmanship, as well as by a certain disarray that roots the form in the world. In the 90s, in the “Leitmotif” exhibition (1994), at Casa França-Brasil, a rough Moebius ribbon floats in the central void of neoclassical architecture. In Popcreto (1994), the artist builds a rectangular quasi-plane, with hollow geometry, formed by spaced paper rods. These simple strategies, partly maintained in the works presented in between the lines, destabilize the form: the serial variation generates an internal movement and the gaps absorb, in slices, the instability of the world. The misalignment of the folds refers, at every moment, to the provisional, already established in the very material of the paper sculpture. The challenge to the supposed fragility of paper, underlying the artist's poetics, was also radicalized with the monumental and floating Biruta, at Culturgest in Lisbon (1997).

In her extensive and solid career, Valéria Costa Pinto leads to an experience of the instability of perception and challenges the certainties of the gaze. Starting from apparently simple spatial games with elements that found visuality – line, shape, plane and color –, dear to constructive movements in Brazil, she discusses the mutable and complex nature of the visible. With the investment of the body and the manipulation of paper, it contributes to deflecting, flexing, compressing and stretching the operations of exact calculation and the watertight certainties regarding form in space. It invites, therefore, to the adventure of the active and moving look that has historically guided the debate on the phenomenology of perception. Far from historical constructive functionalism, it shares the libertarian restlessness arising from the sensitive experience of fold and void, taken as constituent elements of another geometry of the visible.
