The second exhibition that is part of the project Hassis 100 Years will open in Santa Catarina Historical Museum, at Cruz e Sousa PalaceOn Florianópolis. Curated by Luciana Paulo Correa e Monique Fonseca"Between the Instant and Eternity" will bring together some of the artist's works that have never been exhibited to the public. The opening will be at 10:30 am, and admission is free.
Created on mediums such as canvas, kraft paper, and plastic, the 18 pictorial works belonging to the Hassis Foundation's collection demonstrate the diversity of materials explored by the artist. The paintings reveal different moments in Hassis's production and broaden the possibilities for interpreting his work.
According to curator Monique Fonseca, approximately 80% of the works have never been exhibited before and are the result of in-depth research in the Foundation's collection. “The selection process involved extensive research aimed at revealing little-known works and offering new perspectives on the artist's production. This is a unique opportunity to discover previously unexplored facets of Hassis's work,” she shares.
Although marked by its unprecedented nature, the exhibition also includes emblematic themes from the artist's career. Among them are works dedicated to Florianópolis and its landscape, such as "South Wind and Rain," painted in 1957 and considered a symbolic work. Series addressing Carnival, religiosity, and other recurring themes are also present.
By proposing the title “Between the Instant and Eternity,” the curatorial team acknowledges the unique place Hassis occupies: a body of work that doesn't belong solely to the past, but continues to resonate in the present with the same force. Monique Fonseca expects the public to be surprised upon visiting the exhibition. “The exhibition wasn't conceived as a retrospective, but as an experience that showcases Hassis's continued relevance. And if, at the end of the visit, the public feels they have been in the presence of an artist whose work remains alive, capable of moving, provoking, and enchanting a hundred years after his birth, we will have achieved our main objective,” she states.
This will not be the first time that Hassis's works have been presented at the Santa Catarina Historical Museum. The artist has already participated in two solo exhibitions there, in 1990 with "Contestado – Terra Contestada", and in 1991 with "Farra do Boi".
