What is the body in relation to the object? What is its reaction when it is in a territory outside the established standards? When interacting with a different and unusual material, how does the body redefine the spaces of action with a given object? It is from these questions that the first solo exhibition of Nazareth Pacheco na Lume Gallery"So do it!“. Curated by Galciani Neves, the exhibition instigates a reflection between what is regimented and what is possible, when “objects appropriated from everyday life are reproduced in unusual materials, while their uses are also reconfigured beyond the prescribed and current normativities”.
Nazareth Pacheco transforms her work into a record of her experience and invites the visitor to question the meaning of the forms called “standards”, intended for parameterized uses aimed at the “common human being”. Common, according to whom?
By changing the weight and material of everyday objects, the artist provokes an abrupt reconfiguration in their habitual handling and, thus, transforms their relationship with the body that observes them. In the curator’s words: “Nazareth calls us to perceive events sensitively and to construct multiple narratives: that which bodies tell, that which bodies contrast when they dare to equate them. The stories are not the same, just as the bodies are not the same either.”
“So, do it!”, the instruction that gives the exhibition its name, recalls one of Pacheco’s contacts with the artist Louise Bourgeois, a fundamental reference in his production, especially in the relationship with materials, in the methods of creation and in the way of approaching autobiographical themes through visual language: “To live and to do, (…) to feel in one’s own skin and overflow into art; to be swept away by events and re-materialize them.” concludes Galciani Neves.
