Details

The technological advances of the space race between the United States and the former Soviet Union, which culminated in the arrival of man on the Moon in 1969, are in the imagination of Emmanuel Nassar. But the title of your installation Space bodywork, in addition to the scientific and political aspects, also includes an informal term, which refers to metallic structures of motor vehicles. For the artist, tinwork is associated with the term “old tin”, generally used to designate the precarious state of large deteriorated machines.

The work brings together opposites: aged bodywork with signs of wear, what is primitive and popular in suburban body shops, to space and highly technological missions that contributed to the development of satellite communications. There is, in this juxtaposition, something of the dream and fantasy of flying. But if flight is linked to the image of freedom that both planes and birds evoke, one of the wings of Space bodywork it is severed, as if it were embedded in the wall. Inside the Glass Room at MAM São Paulo, the work seems to be more about the impossibility of taking flight than about the complete realization of the desire for freedom.

The artist designed and built his own private jet, which resembles toy planes, but is inspired by Embraer's Phenom 300 model, which is among the best-selling executive jets in the world. But, instead of praising the high performance and power that a small aircraft carries, the artist ironically points to the country's social contradictions and the contrast between the imagination of the elite and the people, precisely showing that This separation is no longer so clear.

Emmanuel Nassar values the colors of advertising metal sheets and what is popular on the outskirts of urban centers, especially in Belém do Pará. Although, in the present work, he does not appropriate the discarded boards, using galvanized zinc, the set of paintings that form the plane echoes the improvisation of inventive solutions. Among the marks of the poetics of Emmanuel Nassar there is the recognition of gambiarras, temporary gadgets, created with few resources, that solve practical everyday problems.

Space bodywork allows the different MAM audiences to have fun while being welcomed with the prestige and status of a red carpet, to play, to take selfies with their luggage, as if they were about to embark on a dream that, although it doesn't literally take off, is coming true in the unique and generous experience that the work provides.
