Details

Eleonore Koch: on stage presents the public with a collection of works by the artist of Jewish origin, born in 1926 in Germany, who took refuge in Brazil with her family at the age of 12. Eleonore Koch lived for periods in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and London, passing away in the first city, in 2018.

Koch approached traditional pictorial genres (landscapes, interiors and still lifes) and a technique as old as egg tempera based on contemporary issues and his life experience. His paintings refer to exile, deterritorialization, a sense of being in the world, aware of privileges and the consequences of one's choices. Individuality, loneliness, traffic, displacement are experienced from places of gender, ethnicity and class. She is a reference for artists who are interested in painting's ability to communicate: the conciseness of her compositional strategies, her acute chromatic sense, her obsessive methodology, contribute not to a formalism closed in itself, but which is nourished by questions about intersubjectivity and of the world's agency over us. What does the painting show and to whom? How is the connection between artist and audience established? What does painting contribute to our perception of the world that surrounds us, that we inhabit and that inhabits us?

Bringing together works from public and private collections, most of them unpublished, the exhibition also presents photographs, postcards and studies – which are part of the artist's archive, recently donated to MAC USP. The documents demonstrate Koch's creation process and his questions about the nature of the image, perspective and framing.

The metaphor in the exhibition title refers to cinema: “scene” is the dramatic unit of a script, which can be covered from various angles, called shots or shots. Many of the works look like scenarios for events that have just taken place or are yet to take place. The almost total absence of the human figure is contradicted by the repeated presence of objects charged with affection, characters in a silent plot.
The cinematic analogy also structures the exhibition, organized based on pictorial genres in relation to the types of framing: landscapes that refer to general plans (seascapes, deserts and gardens); interiors refer to medium plane; and the still lifes in the first and very close-ups. The cinematographic thinking that governs its framing, sequence shots and cuts reverberates in the way the exhibition space was conceived. The public is invited to a traveling journey without a predetermined path, a dive into an open narrative. Because if Koch's painting always started from a series of conscious intentions, for the artist, her works should maintain an open space for the sensations and meanings constructed by the public, who allow themselves to be affected by them.
