Curated by Claudio Cretti, artistic director of Home of Culture from the ParkAgainst do other brings together works by Alberto PittaMonica Nador, the collective that Nador founded and is part of, the JAMAC (Garden Miriam Art Club), and text by curator and critic Thais Rivitti. With productions that come from community movements, both cultural and social, these artists use fabric and screen printing as the connecting basis of their practices. Presented in the exhibition room Gallery do Park, the exhibition revisits paintings by Nador produced since the 1990s in conversation with recent production carried out at JAMAC and paintings by Pitta.

“At first, the encounter takes place in the eye. Placed face to face, the works of Nador + JAMAC and those of Pitta speak the language of painting. More specifically, a painting that, at least in part, is structured as a print, heavily supported by the silkscreen technique, the repetition of motifs that spread across the surface of the painting, creating a pulsating area there.” – excerpt from the text by Thais Rivitti for the exhibition In front of the other.

the trajectory of Monica Nador began with his participation in the exhibition How are you, Generation 80?, held 40 years ago at Parque Lage, in Rio de Janeiro. Over time, Nador turned to a more collective, socially involved practice by contributing to JAMAC, without abandoning his space in the institutional circuit.

“While JAMAC has been creating, over the years, a true collection of prints based on the life stories of its visitors, Pitta uses elements of popular culture, the orixás, the tools of each of them, ritualistic objects, vibrant colors, political and social phrases. Both look at their productions as channels to retell stories that have been left aside in the official narrative.” – excerpt from the text by Thais Rivitti for the exhibition In front of the other.

Artist, designer and carnival worker, Alberto Pitta He rescues aesthetic values in his Afro-Bahian prints. Using symbols, clothing tools and ornaments of the orixás as a source of inspiration, his production is the result of his experience in Candomblé terreiros and involvement in the Salvador carnival, where he began around 40 years ago.

JAMAC The starting point was the project Mônica Nador, Paredes Pinturas (1999), in which the artist created mural paintings in communities together with their residents. Since 2004, located on the outskirts of the south zone of São Paulo, the space has promoted stencil and screen printing workshops, among other activities. The results of this project are also the flags raised on the facade of the Casa de Cultura do Parque, in the second edition of the Dando Bandeira project, created from workshops at the House organized by the artists from the exhibition Diante do outro – Alberto Pitta, Mônica Nador + JAMAC – and in collaboration with the Casa's educational center and partner institutions.
