A Nonada ZS, located in Copacabana, RJ, opens on September 20, 2024, the exhibition “Dance in the Sun and Rest in the Moon“, by visual artist Samara Paiva. Composed of 12 works, it offers a deep dive into the artist's investigations into the behavior of the black body in the intimacy of domestic spaces, using oil painting as a means of exploring these relationships. The opening will take place from 17 pm to 21 pm, with visitors remaining until November 16.
Samara Paiva’s artistic practice is characterized by the investigation of spatiality and the subjectivity of the black body, exploring how the domestic environment enables humanization and contemplation. Through a palette of warm and soft colors, her works blur the boundaries between the concrete and the abstract, creating a universe in which the figures portrayed find rest and intimacy. The use of low contrast, night and shadows serves as a tool to free her characters from the rigidity of everyday life.
Self-taught, the artist began drawing and painting after graduating in architecture, using painting as a way to convey experiences of intimacy and solitude. Born in 1995 in Maués, AM, and currently living in São Paulo, she seeks to portray scenes from everyday life, capturing emotions and the relationship between the body and space. Her works invite the public to reflect on the vulnerability and complexity of the human experience, especially from the perspective of a black woman.
The exhibition's critical text, written by Ariana Nuala, draws a parallel between Samara's works and Brazilian music, especially the samba of Clara Nunes. Nuala uses the song Juízo Final as a reference to understand the dichotomy between good and evil, relating it to the palette and themes explored by the artist and suggests that her works transcend conflict, offering a visual narrative that privileges rest, affection and harmonious coexistence with space and with others.
With “Dancing in the Sun and Resting on the Moon,” Samara Paiva not only presents her unique perspective on the spatiality of the body, but also opens a path of dialogue on how art can be a territory of resistance and freedom. The exhibition reaffirms the role of Nonada ZS as a space for innovation and representation in the contemporary art scene, promoting new talents and encouraging discussions that reflect the pluralities of today’s Brazil.
