With critical text by Agnaldo Farias, the exhibition starts from impasses linked to the tensions between inventiveness and automation, fraying questions about the processes of digital construction of the plastic image and the exercises of repetition and saturation rehearsed by artificial models. By engaging in algorithmic plots alluding to the frenetic mappings that reorder the autonomous role of choice in the name of biased paths, Marcela turns to the preamble of these circuits and questions the very lucidity that leads to the fantastical split between real and digital as a parallel between reality and fiction. With the distinctions now loosened, Manichaeisms expire and reality, for the artist, exudes the countermovement of a certain well-resolved mismatch that collapses these conventions.
If the grid, as a vital structure of modern art, points to opposite directions of understanding — from the supposed purification of the tableau in its relationship with the world, from one angle that would make it a whole in itself and, on the other hand, as part of a larger totality from which it is constructed as a fragment of broader relationships —, Marcela always seems to resort to works that constitute themselves as integral units of the world. Whether in the false three-dimensionality guaranteed by the Quanta series, which sounds like a pun on the teleological narratives of the plane that gave rise to an entire sector of modernist art criticism, or in the three-dimensional stills based on videos assembled in a digital and entirely planar space, in Meio da Jornada, the works exercise something of an entropic vocation that disorients the given terms. After all, to what extent is there any sense in speculating about reality without considering the digital space as an active field of its integrity? And to what extent do modern conventions still account for the discourse on art?
According to Agnaldo, in the exhibition's critical text, “the works presented by Marcela Crosman, extracted from speculations about graphs, diagrams, mappings, scans, circuits, added to the multiple possibilities opened by Generative Design programs, programs focused on the development of parametric models, have to do with imagination. They concern expression, the artist's subjectivity and the plasticity of abstract thought, and one should not seek to reflect them in reality, as if a mapping with pretensions of fidelity to the mapped object. What is at stake is the exploration of the nature of this language, an exercise connected with the convolutions, movements, groping involved in the expansion of language, in the translations that occur, in the slow process spent on its purification”.
