A Hugo France Gallery, in partnership with Nara Roesler, it presents Firebreak, solo show by the artist from Rio Raul Mourao, which for more than three decades has been building a body of work that takes as its starting point the spaces between public and private, the street, the studio and the dynamics of the city and art. Presenting twenty-two works by the artist developed between 2020 and 2024, the exhibition will take place between March 2nd and June 25th, at the Hugo França gallery, in Trancoso, Bahia, and will be accompanied by a text by Evangelina Seiler.

The main gallery space will feature the monumental sculptures Rebel #1 and #2 (2021) and a new set of sixteen smaller-scale sculptures.

In the external area adjacent to the main warehouse, the Rebel #6 and #7 (2022) sculptures will be on display. Despite the monumentality of the works, the central issue is not weight or brutality, but rather balance, the possibility of movement and care. “All it takes is a small gesture from the viewer for this entire mass to move, allowing the lines of the steel structure to intersect and create visual confusion,” explains the artist.

It is this engagement, adherence and possibility of resistance, not only in the field of art, but also beyond it, that are the drivers of this production. The spectator then stops being a mere passive agent and becomes the one who triggers the mobility of work.

In the gallery's external exhibition space, the artist will present the installation Perdido #1 (2024), a set of twenty-four arrows on flags raised 6 m above the ground on galvanized steel poles. These elements are an unfolding of a series of photographs that Mourão took between the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, still present in his work today and which depict white hoardings with red arrows used by public authorities to indicate deviations in urban space. by virtue of works.
