Details

O Post Office Museum in Brasilia presents the exhibition “South“. Curated by Isabela Simoes, Helena Lopes e Marianne Vincentini and cultural production of Augusto Herkenhoff, the exhibition brings together 100 contemporary Brazilian artists who present a unique perspective of the peoples of the “South”. At a time when wars and the climate crisis haunt humanity, the project carried out by the Zagut collective seeks to present a counterpoint to the hegemonic colonial vision of the global art system, in favor of environmental preservation and climate change, regarding themes dear to contemporary times. The exhibition will be on display until November 10th and is open to visitors from Tuesday to Friday, from 10 am to 18 pm, and Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, from 13 pm to 17 pm. The Museu Correios is located in Setor Comercial Sul, quadra 4, bloco A, n° 256, ed. Apolo, Asa Sul. Brasília/DF. Admission is free and open to all audiences.

When Uruguayan artist Torres Garcia created the drawing “América Invertida” in 1943, in order to make explicit what he had written in 1935, the “Escuela del Sur” symbolized the importance of Latin America becoming aware that the North-centric position should not be its guide, building its own perspectives, including the wisdom of the native peoples and the review of principles standardized by European colonization (decolonization), broadening the worldview to a greater acceptance of differences and strengthening democracy. Brazilian Marcio D'Olne Campos contrasted “sulear” with “nortear”, and the neologism was used by Paulo Freire.

The exhibition Sulear, organized by Galeria Zagut, proposes rethinking perceptions of the world through possible perspectives originating from the axis originating from the global South, where Brazil is located. It is time to explore narratives and aesthetics that reverse or reorganize our vital affections. In this case, sulear means questioning erroneous notions of power crystallized in a “developed global North” as opposed to a southern hemisphere considered “backward”. It means creating strategies that allow us to appropriate existence under other vital connections. It means assuming autonomy in the creation of our own cultural senses and meanings.

Creating new cartographies means presenting and drawing lines in the self-representation made about ourselves. It means imagining new coordinates capable of serving as guidance. In 2022, the largest contemporary art exhibition on the world circuit, Documenta in Kassel, Germany, brought together for the first time in history a collective curator from the global South of Indonesia, resulting in a greater plurality of artists in the exhibition. Following this trend, the exhibition “Sulear” opens its doors to investigating, creating and experiencing new artistic imaginations. It is the time and the moment for the global South to show what it is composed of and for the arts to create powers and transformations.

“The art made by Latin American artists reflects the experiences of people who have enormous wisdom, but who are generally not considered central to global reflections. Especially in relation to ecology, these nations have a very interesting perspective when compared to the countries considered central to the North,” points out one of the curators of the exhibition, Isabela Simões.
