A 18 gallery opens the 2026 edition of NOT SAMO, the group exhibition that brings together around 60 works by 29 artists, selected through the annual call for entries promoted by the gallery.
The exhibition title references the expression SAMO (“same old shit”), a signature created by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Al Diaz, which became popular after being spread throughout the streets of New York to criticize the status quo of the time. By adding the term NOT to the original phrase, the project proposes a shift in meaning, traversing different languages, techniques, and ways of doing things to seek new perspectives.
Each edition of NOT SAMO serves as an opportunity to observe some of the artistic production being developed outside the bubble of the most well-known circuits. The project brings together artists of different origins, backgrounds, and career stages, creating a panorama marked by the diversity of languages, concepts, and modes of production. Instead of seeking a common theme, the exhibition seeks the singularity of research that points to its own paths and potential future developments.
From a selection made among more than 530 entries from 9 countries, the collection of works features techniques such as painting, drawing, sculpture, and others. Participating in this edition are the artists: Ariane Ventos, Bernardo Alves, Breno de Sant'ana, Cabeza, Cadumen, Cris Marcos, Dhyogo Oliveira, Erly Almanza, Fernando Simões, Gabriela Toral, Guilherme de Carli, Gunga Guerra, Isabel Manini, Isabela Doná Rodrigues, João Paulo, Lina Ferreira, Lucas Mourão, Luiz Breseghello, Luiz Sisinno, Marina Pelli, Murillo Monteolli, Murilo Romeu, Nina Miyamoto, Renato Medeiros, Robson Marques, Sandra Becker, Sofia Ramos, Sonia Gouveia, and Vitor Mazon.
Throughout its editions, NOT SAMO has established itself as a space dedicated to the discovery and visibility of new artistic research. In 2026, the project reaffirms this commitment, inviting the public to explore works that broaden the perspective on contemporary production.
