A Galatea is pleased to present Personal Memories – Eight Decades of Brazilian ArtThis exhibition, a group show featuring works produced between the 1880s and 1980s, many of which have rarely been exhibited and have been preserved for decades in private collections, outside the exhibition circuit, opens on May 28th from 18 PM to 21 PM at the gallery's location on Padre João Manuel street.
More than a collection of historical works, the exhibition reveals a specific imaginary of Brazil constructed throughout the 20th century. The main core of the exhibition traverses urban, coastal, and agricultural landscapes, with works that follow the transformations of the country and the shifts in visuality in the face of modernization.
From the port scenes of Benedito Calixto to the compositions of Alfredo Volpi, passing through the seascapes of José Pancetti, the landscapes of Di Cavalcanti and Alberto da Veiga Guignard, the selection brings together Brazilian artists of different generations, with trajectories of national and international scope, around the same symbolic horizon.
The exhibition also includes works by Candido Portinari, Lasar Segall, Victor Brecheret, Milton Dacosta, Flávio de Carvalho, and Anita Malfatti. Highlights include two rare paintings by Guignard, including the monumental Imaginary Landscape (1952), as well as seascapes by Pancetti and an important collection of works by Di Cavalcanti produced between the 1940s and 1960s.
