A Ema Klabin House Museum presents the exhibition Living in São Paulo: women's stories, conceived by the curator of the house museum, Paulo de Freitas CostaThe exhibition, curated by the educational department, invites the public to explore the city through narratives by ten female writers, bringing together excerpts from their works that traverse daily life, memory, and the space of their homes in São Paulo. By moving between the intimate and the collective, the accounts reveal different ways of living and perceiving the city. The selected excerpts will be displayed alongside rare photographs of the environments of their homes, which relate to the contexts described by the authors.
The exhibition seeks to present the city through female narratives that span different eras, social contexts, and territories. Gilda de Mello e Souza, Zélia Gattai, Rita Lee, Giovana Madalosso, Paula Fábrio, Adriele Oliveira, Helena Silvestre, Lilia Guerra, Luísa Marilac, and Prudence Kalambay draw on intimate, familial, and collective memory to construct portraits of different ways of inhabiting the city.
“São Paulo holds many memories, many stories. The exhibition 'Habitar São Paulo: relatos femininos' (Inhabiting São Paulo: Female Accounts) borrows the gaze and perspective of these writers who described realities and stories as particular as they are universal, bringing us sensitive, tragic, intimate, or even funny accounts. The exhibition thus seeks to broaden our view of a plurality of experiences in a city marked by intense contrasts,” explains Cristiane Alves, educational coordinator and one of the exhibition's curators.
These accounts will be presented through five narrative axes: family, work and coexistence; memory of objects and spaces; from the window outwards; sensory perceptions; and the dreamed city. Organized around these themes, the exhibition is distributed throughout the museum-house and proposes a dialogue between literature and memory. The public will also have access to audio recordings with female voices narrating the selected texts and a reading space with books by the participating writers, allowing for a closer connection with the works and narratives present in the exhibition.
“When we held the ‘Times of a House’ exhibition last year, we realized the importance of the accounts of Ema Klabin and her friends and employees in building a more comprehensive memory, with a special sensitivity. For this exhibition, we thought about expanding the experience, bringing powerful stories that allow us to see the whole city in a different way,” says Paulo Costa, curator of the house museum and creator of the exhibition.
