The exposure "It demonstrates: through poetic definition"brings together works by" Lua Cavalcante, Nara Rosetto, Guto Oca, Daniel Moraes, Jeff Barbato e John Paul Racy, proposing an encounter between art, body and (re)existence, and reaffirming disability as a field of knowledge and invention. On display at Fiesp Cultural CenterLocated on Avenida Paulista, the exhibition stems from the desire to build a collective space where artists, educators, and researchers with disabilities create based on their own experiences, shifting the public's perspective on what is understood by body, normality, and aesthetics.
Curated by Daniel Moraes, founder of Demonstra, in collaboration with researcher Júlia Ayerbe, and with curatorial assistance from Maira Freitas, the exhibition articulates different languages—such as drawing, photography, installation objects, video performance, and publications—around the idea of aesthetic accessibility, and proposes a constellation of bodies and poetics that question hegemonic models of representation and belonging. Beyond inclusion, Demonstra reclaims memory, permanence, and creative power in the space of contemporary visual arts.
The executive manager of Culture at Sesi-SP, Débora Viana, highlights the importance of the institution promoting access to culture with projects like this: “At Sesi-SP, we believe in the power of art as a tool for transformation and active listening. With the exhibition “Demonstra: through the poetics of disability”, we received works in different formats from six artists with disabilities. Beyond an inclusive action, the exhibition explores the potential of the body with disabilities, offers new perspectives on art, and opens paths for transformation. Thus, we reinforce our commitment to promoting a space for reflection and critical thinking, to democratizing access to quality culture, and to promoting meaningful experiences for all audiences, always with free admission.”
Based on the premise that differences and singularities are transformed into artistic, symbolic, and critical material, the exhibition is organized around three curatorial axes that traverse the works and experiences of the artists. Derritório deals with the everyday and the witnessing of disability as a displacement of the body. Monstra investigates spiritual and symbolic dimensions of the non-normative body, evoking ancestry and enchantment. And Manifestu claims the right to fabulation and self-knowledge as an aesthetic and political gesture.
“Demonstra was created in 2021 as a platform for research and dissemination of the artistic production of people with disabilities. The idea was to promote aesthetic, critical, and institutional accessibility. Since then, it has been a reference in mapping practices and poetics that, as we say, challenge the limits of normativity in the visual arts, which is our field. In addition, Demonstra has also been a way to articulate creative networks between Brazil and Portugal,” highlights Daniel Moraes.
The opening of “Demonstra: pela poética def” was conceived at an opportune moment, between the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3rd) and the anniversary of Avenida Paulista (December 8th). This synchronicity transforms the Fiesp Cultural Center into an important stage, where the exhibition affirms disability as a field of invention and aesthetic (re)existence.
