A Gomide&Co is pleased to present 'Water (green)', exhibition of Antonio Ballester Moreno (Spain, 1977). This is the artist's first solo exhibition in Brazil, and the second presentation of his works in the country since his participation as an artist and member of the curatorial team at the 33rd São Paulo Biennial: 'Affinidades Afetivas' (2018), curated by Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro. The exhibition's critical text is written by curator and art critic Taisa Palhares.
For 'Água (verde)', Ballester Moreno starts from the notion of landscape understood as a system in which all elements have a relationship with each other. The exhibition is composed of a new set of large-scale canvases made in acrylic on jute that function as a stage in which the artist seeks to create an environment through the relationship between each of the paintings and their respective combinations of shapes and colors. According to Palhares: “While on the one hand, the compositions recall the universe of the abstract painting tradition of the 20th century, on the other, they refer directly to the symbolic figuration of nature, providing a poetic game that activates the viewer's perception.”
Antonio Ballester Moreno was born in Madrid in 1977, where he lives and works, and is considered one of the leading artists of his generation in Spain. He studied visual arts at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the Universität der Künste Berlin. His production, which includes paintings, collages and ceramics, is based on manual and artisanal work, mobilizing symbolic meanings in a unique repertoire composed of primary colors, economy of forms and exploration of the landscape in its particular elements. His works have been presented in solo and group exhibitions around the world, especially in Europe and the United States, and are present in the collections of museums and institutions such as: Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC), León; Colección Ella Fontanals Cisneros (CIFO), Miami; Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Barcelona; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS), Madrid; among others.
