Presenting the painter's new series of portraits, in which he mobilizes bodies absorbed by dark backgrounds, the exhibition addresses structural issues in the production of Douglas Ferreiro in terms of the self-fictionalization of narratives and characters built from a certain atmospheric incompleteness. Configured in subtleties and delicate gestures, his figures sustain and tension a range of sensuality crossed by the instability of the definitions that involve the bed and the home as affective spaces.
A place of comfort, serenity, anguish, insecurity, restlessness and much more, the bed, in these works, encounters the uncertainties guaranteed by the night. If the day is the moment of expectations and more defined terms — a kind of light that breaks through the haziness of darkness —, dusk encounters a truly uncertain reality. Night is the margin of error of rationality: a gap for desire, will, emotion and reflection. The spaces, then, constructed by the artist seem as if suspended from the world they inhabit, they sound ethereal, non-existent or even just uncertain. Introspective, his figures return to themselves and seem to question their own identity. But, with nothing complete, the modest gestures and simple expressions that stamp the faces of his characters seem to exercise the path of a poetics of doubt.
According to Lorraine Mendes, in the exhibition’s critical text, “Ferreiro describes another state/space where the bedroom is reconfigured in place of wakefulness, insomnia and anxiety: the feeling that runs through the body is not only a reflection of desires, but also of anguish. The restless sleep in Kids See Ghosts Sometimes continues to tell us this story. The nuances that delicately create a narrative for this series attest to human complexity even in such an ordinary flat moment. Douglas Ferreiro invited us to sit on the edge of this bed, to be part of the blue and see there a double of our own restlessness.”
