The 38 Panorama of Brazilian Art of the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art will be held at Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo, between October 5, 2024 and January 26, 2025, with free entry. The change of location and date is due to the renovation of the marquee at Ibirapuera Park, where MAM is based. Designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer and listed as a Historical Heritage Site, the Park's marquee is undergoing renovation throughout its structure, and the MAM section should reopen to the public in early 2025.
According to Cauê Alves, chief curator at MAM, “although the renovation of the Ibirapuera Park marquee will affect the museum's programming, it will be very positive for the city. It has been a few years since MAM has established partnerships with institutions in the cultural axis of Parque Ibirapuera, but holding the 38th MAM Panorama of Brazilian Art at MAC, in addition to a historical rapprochement between the two institutions, is a moment of integration and sum of efforts to benefit art and culture in general”.
MAM São Paulo and MAC-USP share the same origin, despite following very different paths. MAM is structured as a non-profit civil society of public interest, and MAC is a university museum, managed by the University of São Paulo. The history that connects the two institutions, as well as the projects carried out together at different times, will be presented to the visitor in a timeline that opens the exhibition space of the 38th Panorama.
“It is with great satisfaction that the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo hosts the 38th Panorama of Brazilian Contemporary Art, traditionally held by the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo. The quality of the hall made it a very important space for enjoyment, recognition and problematization of the direction of art in Brazil in recent decades. At this time of temporary closure of the MAM headquarters due to the restoration works on the Ibirapuera Marquise, MAC USP could not fail to support its sister institution, partner in so many joint museological, training and curatorial projects. This history of collaborations actually inspired the two museums to include in the 2024 edition of Panorama a small timeline of their multiple intersections and reciprocities”, comments José Tavares Correia de Lira, director of MAC-USP.
