Exhibition "1st Moving Image Exhibition – MAPA"

Free admission! The Latin American Cultural Center (CAL) hosts a national video art gallery showcasing the work of 10 Brazilian artists; see the names.
On display from July 9th to 31st, the 'Moving Image Exhibition – MAPA' gallery occupies both floors of CAL simultaneously, Monday to Saturday, between 10 am and 19 pm. Admission is free.

Residents of Brasilia and tourists are expected at the 'House of Culture of Latin America' (CAL)Starting July 9th at 18 PM, a special tribute to contemporary video art produced in Brazil will take place. Artists from different regions of Brazil, special guests, filmmakers, DJs, and curators will join the public to celebrate the history of video art during this event. 1st Moving Image Exhibition – MAPA.

Located near the Praça dos Três Poderes (Three Powers Square), the Casa de Cultura da América Latina (South Wing of Brasília) hosts the new season of MAPA, from July 9th to 31st, Monday to Saturday, from 10 am to 19 pm, with free admission. Promoting curatorial dialogues and exchanges with artists from Maranhão, Pará, and Rio de Janeiro, the traveling exhibition arrives in the Federal District in an unprecedented format, welcoming the MAPA Video Art Gallery.

The program simultaneously occupies both floors of CAL. For exhibitions, the Urucum Gallery presents ten video art pieces in short documentary format, while the Pocket Gallery brings together interviews, commentaries, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the production. The CAL Gallery, meanwhile, hosts video installations that marked the exhibitions in São Luís (MA) and Belém (PA), expanding the dialogue between artists, territories, and different languages ​​of moving images.

In a spectacle of 'moving images', the audience watches the screening of ten short films: Everything is Current, by Rafa Cardozo; A Horizon in Motion, by Bárbara Savannah; Crossing, by Ícaro Matos; Every Journey is Also a River, by Juruna; Dawn and Escape, by Leonardo Venturieri; A Little House on the Rails, by Acaique; History of the Earth, by Dinho Araújo; Fragile Hardness, by Inke; Temp(l)o do Rosa Fixado, by Ramusyo Brasil; and Midday Sun, by Silvana Mendes.

In light of important milestones, the exhibition arrives during the celebrations of half a century of video art in Brazil. In this sense, MAPA takes the passion for video art beyond the initial research on technologies and bodies in the 90s, and refines the artistic vision with the inclusion of collages and photographs, as well as digital paintings in the artistic production.

Showcasing the power of video art and videomapping across Brazil, MAPA celebrates its arrival in Brasília after coloring the historic facades of the North and Northeast regions. The exhibition across the cities already boasts 8 hours of programming and over 3,2 square meters of art on display, involving the direct participation of 230 collaborators and 40 organizations.

The historical legacy gives rise to the gallery's identity, which concludes an itinerant cycle dedicated to preserving railway memory through art. According to the general coordinator of MAPA, João Pacca, the collection created addresses issues of the present, past, and future through an accessible language.

“We offered the Carajás Railway infrastructure a collection of contemporary art that highlights the main representatives of its memory and potential, formed by artists from Maranhão (MA) and Pará (PA), each with their own team and community. I believe this edition of MAPA was extremely brilliant. Understanding railway memory is not a task for literal interpretation. The Carajás Railway is gigantic, both in importance and complexity. And the artists we invited to the project brought us absolutely distinct rhetorics that allow us to create a very rich observation of this cultural relic that is the railway,” concludes João Pacca.

The 1st edition of MAPA – Moving Image Exhibition is produced by OPACCA Produção de Imagem, in partnership with Vale, through Resources for the Preservation of Railway Memory (RPMF), and is an initiative of the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT).
