Clarice Berto – President of AAMAM

The vain and flamboyant Clarice used to attend the Associação dos Amigos do Museu de Arte Moderna since she was 22 years old and was elected president in 2001. She is at the head of the association alone. Without the assiduous members of yore, there are no funds even to play a waiter for the museum bar. In 1949, Assis Chateubriand provided two rooms on R. 7 de Abril, to house the São Paulo MAM and its association. In 1958, the museum moved to Ibirapuera, where it remains today. Gradually, AAMAM dissociated itself from the museum until it became completely independent. In a building at Av. Ipiranga, 324, next to Copan, since 1978, he faces difficulties and mishaps along the way. Today, the bar suffers from time restrictions imposed by the commercial condominium in which it is located. Clarice, with her necklaces and golden jewelry, lives two blocks away, is retired and dedicates her nights to this heritage and to encouraging young artists, trying to keep alive this place that is part of the history of São Paulo.
